Guide
Madeley Tidy Group
As Spring moves into Summer, the MTG hopes that you will notice some of the changes that we have made in the village recently. In March, we had a tree and shrub planting morning and planted three Silver Birches in Furnace Lane where their bright trunks and small leaves can be appreciated by the people living in the warden controlled bungalows, as well as anyone passing along the lane. In Izaac Walton Way, we dug in shrubs that have bright winter colour in front of the electricity sub-station. Not very big now, as they mature they should brighten a dull plot of land. The junction of Woodside and New Road has been enlivened by two Cotoneasters, whose red berries should attract over-wintering birds. Most noticeable will be the Larch and the Lime that we put in the grass at Bevan Place plus three shrubs that should show yellow flowers at the beginning of the year. These are in addition to the Rowan that was planted in memory of Joyce Fishwick, and the Lilacs, we planted last year. We are grateful to Gordon Lancaster, of The Conservation Group, whose earlier research ensured that we were not planting in areas that might disturb the underground services.
We hope that you like what we are doing to make Madeley a greener, more colourful place. Your help with gardening would be appreciated but if you are unable to help, perhaps you would keep an eye on our plantings so that they may thrive and give pleasure to everyone.

In 1950 the Church School was known as Madeley Endowed School and provided education for children whose ages ranged from five to fifteen until 1957 when the Secondary School was opened and it assumed its present name of Sir John Offley Primary School.
The old school in its last magazine contained an item headed ‘’Ahoy there litter louts’’ by class 9 which is as appropriate and pertinent today as it was then, and is a reminder to us all to show support for Madeley Tidy Group in preserving the whole environment of our very attractive village.
Do the accompanying names of the contributors ring any bells?
(The 1957 magazine has been preserved and resurrected by Margaret Rose, as she was then)

AHOY THERE, LITTER LOUTS!
by Class 9
Put your litter in a bin,
To throw it down it is a sin,
This is what you ought to do -
Take your papers home with you.
M.Clewes.
If you have a cigarette butt
Do not trample it under foot.
Dout it first, then throw in bin,
Or a fire will start within.
A.Wainright.
We've "bins in Madeley two or three,
And none gets used that I can see.
There's paper littered in the street,
And people kick it with their feet.
J.Oxer.
If you've got sweets and nuts and such
Use some thought (it won't take much!)
Put your paper in the bin,
Or put it in your Snapping- tin.
J.Griffiths.
Mr. Bailey is our school teacher
Talks to us just like a preacher,
He tells us where to put our litter,
But if we don't he gets bitter.
W.Plant.
Do not leave your litter,
Put it in a bin,
Don't smash your empty bottles,
Nor throw your old fruit tin.
D.Buckley.
If you go into a shop
And there you buy a lollipop,
Put your paper in the bin,
And then you will not be run in.
B.Sumnall.
Remember next time when you're out,
The countryside will be better,
If you'll only think about
Where you throw your litter!
E.Sims.

Madeley Tidy Group has been pleased to receive a grant of £50.00p from Morrison’s Supermarkets, as part of the Action Earth Initiative. The aim is to encourage local people to become involved in their environment.
In April colourful new shrubs were planted at the Memorial Garden, in memory of the 63 miners who lost their lives in the Leycett Pit Disaster in 1880. The garden is also to remember all those who lost their lives in the mining industry. We are pleased that new people joined us in this task.
The group would like to say a ‘BIG’ thank you to all people who have worked hard in maintaining the flower beds throughout the village. Not forgetting, of course, all the generous donors of money, to purchase flowers and troughs.
If you feel that you could spare a little time to improve our village, please meet us at Greyhound Court on the last Saturday of each month, at 10.00am, for a litter pick.
June 2007
We, The Madeley Tidy Group would like to up-date you as to our latest efforts in helping to make our Village prettier & tidier.
The main projects being gardening around Madeley and Madeley Heath. All the large beds have been cleared and most have been planted. The Rock Garden on The Moss, which is maturing nicely, The Greyhound, The Vicarage Lane, and the Madeley Heath beds. At the Miners Wheel Memorial, which commemorates the Leycett Pit disasters, we have planted some trees, and in Madeley Village itself, some lilac shrubs; as you can see we have been very busy. While Sue & Rikki were working on the Izaak Walton Way bed, three very nice ladies who live nearby very kindly volunteered to look after it, for which wee are very grateful, as we are only a small group and any help is much appreciated. A big thank you to our three musketeers…
Now litter. On last months litter pick we decided to target the following litter hot spots:
Moss Side of The Pool, including the fenced off Wild Life Area.
The weir, stream and around the car park adjoining the butchers.
Furnace Lane and the Village Hall Field.
We do hope you have noticed the improvement, and we would like to say a big thank you to all the wonderful people who collect litter as they walk around the village; it really does help a lot, have you noticed? If any of you would like a litter-picker or black bags, we can provide them free of charge.
Please contact: Sue: 751524 or Rikki: 750570.
Oh, and just one more thing, I think we are extending our services. While Sue & Chris, her husband, were litter picking, they noticed that five baby ducklings had fallen over the weir, so without more ado, Sue and Chris came to their rescue and they were soon swimming happily with their Mum, back on Madeley Pool. There is no end to our talents…
Madeley flower beds are owned by Staffordshire County Council, not Madeley Parish Council, and are maintained by the Tidy group.
The Tidy Group would like to express their thanks to the local businesses who have supported
them with the planting at Morningside and the other beds around the village -
It would not have been possible without them:
-
Aspire Housing
-
Elmside Garden Centre
-
EJW Garden Services
-
Evening Spice Restaurant
-
Homers Cafe
-
Shepleys Butchers
-
Tangs Dynasty
We think everyone in Madeley
appreciates the difference their support has made in the improved appearance of our village.
