Madeley & District Community First Response Team

As it has been a year now since we became fully operational, in April 2007, we thought we would give you an insight into what has been happening recently.

So far this year, up to the end of April 2008, we have responded to 57 ‘treble nine’ emergency calls. Our aim is to arrive there before the ambulance or paramedic and provide emergency treatment, stabilize the patient until they do arrive, and then hand over to them. The areas we cover are the parishes of Madeley, Betley and Keele, but we are on occasion tasked by the Ambulance Service to nearby areas such as Baldwin’s Gate and Woore.

We are all volunteers and in full time employment and give up our spare time to be ‘on call’, for which we receive no remuneration. Unfortunately, as we are few in number, we cannot provide cover 24/7, as much as we would like to. Also, Responder groups do not receive any funding and have to be fully self supporting financially. This means that a lot of our time has to be given to fund raising activities: as an example, one of our Responders, who lives in Keele, is undertaking a sponsored 135 mile cycle ride on 26-30th May to raise funds for us. Luckily for us, our response vehicle has been donated by Britannia Building Society and the Rotary Clubs of Audley and Newcastle, for which we are very grateful. However, we have to find the costs for the day to day running of the enterprise. This is either fund raising by the Responders or kind donations from the public. Sometimes these costs are frighteningly high; for example, when Staffordshire Ambulance Service was merged into the West Midlands Ambulance Service, the new Service decided that each Responder should be trained in driving while on blue lights. The training costs about £400.00 per person and has to be raised by each Responder group!

We are now a registered charity, number 1119828, and so you can look us up on the Charities Commission website.
